The Lionesses defender is the latest squad member to speak about the quirks and characters within the dressing room

THAT LIONESSES PODCAST

As the England women’s squad continue their build-up to this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 tournament in Switzerland, we caught up with Lionesses defender Esme Morgan.

Following on from Grace Clinton, Niamh Charles, Jess Park, Lauren Hemp and Leah Williamson so far, the Washington Spirit and former Manchester City player tackled our Campmates quiz as we find out a bit more about the characters and dynamics within the Lionesses ranks.

So Esme, who is your best friend in the camp?

The Hempster, Lauren Hemp. We’re best friends in life and in football. We first met on an England camp with the WU17s and Lauren can have a quite stern face at times, so I didn’t think she liked me. But then one day we suddenly got chatting, we clicked and hit it off so it’s great to have her around. Even more so now that I’m playing abroad and not with City, England camp is our time to catch up so it’s always very exciting to see her again.

Who’s the biggest joker in the camp?

A lot of people make me laugh to be honest, but I’d have to say Tooney. She just makes me laugh and she doesn’t mind making a fool of herself and being the butt of everyone’s jokes so she really embraces being the joker of the team and she does a great job of it.

Who’s good to pull for a quiet chat about anything, not necessarily football related?

That’s a great question! Someone wise maybe, like Jess Carter. She’s very smart and has very good advice on things and has a lot of life experience. So it’s nice to chat to her about life away from football.

Who’s the keenest trainer?

I’d say Lucy Bronze, she’s so competitive and she loves training and just pushing her body to its limits. The ultimate pro!

Who would you always find in the gym?

Maya Le Tissier. She’s always doing upper body work and she’s so strong, undoubtedly because she goes to the gym so much. She’s always lifting!

Who’s in charge of the music?

Leah, undoubtedly. If it’s not her then Alex [Greenwood] or ‘Less [Russo] have also done it on previous camps. They all do a great job and try to cater to everyone’s tastes. There’s a good mixture and we get to hear everything. There’s been a few times when I’ve heard something and had to have a little ‘Shazam’ because I’ve liked it and not known what it is so I’ve wanted to steal it for my own playlist!

Who would you most likely find on their phone?

Most of the team, to be honest! I feel like everyone these days is pretty attached to their phone, which is sad really.

Who is the most competitive outside of football?

I don’t like losing at anything, even if it’s board games, so I’d put myself up there for sure. But Hempster and Jessie P have wanted to introduce me to a new card game and it sounds like they’ve got a little competition and ranking system going on so maybe those two. It’s in all of our nature to be competitors so I don’t think anyone here would go into things without really caring about the outcome. We all want to win at everything!

Which player can you always rely on, on the pitch?

Well, Tooney always seems to score big goals doesn’t she. Whenever there’s been an important game, especially at Wembley which seems to be her stamping ground, so I’ll go for the Toonster.
