The Para Lions cruelly lose to the reigning champions on spot-kicks at the CP World Cup

England suffered heartbreak in the quarter-final of the CP World Cup as they were beaten on penalties by Ukraine.

The Para Lions were excellent against the side ranked top of the world, creating plenty of chances with lots of possession but could not find a breakthrough.

Defeat was confirmed in the cruellest possible manner, as Ukraine won 2-0 on spot-kicks.

England made a fast start to the game, dominating possession and creating all of the best chances in the first half.

Matt Crossen’s long-distance effort was saved after five minutes before Harry Baker headed wide little over halfway through the opening period.

The best chance of the half then fell to Mason Dunbar, who initially miscued an effort before seeing a well-struck shot cleared off the line when it seemed to be destined for the net.

Ukraine started the second half quicker, forcing Giles Moore into action within five minutes of kick-off.

Liam Irons then dragged a shot wide at the other end as both teams searched for what could be a decisive opener.

It would prove elusive in 60 minutes, though – Moore making another sharp stop from a free-kick – and the game went to extra time.

Moore made two more good saves in the opening 10-minute period as Ukraine aimed to nick a winner but England continued to give as good as they’ve got at the other end.

The Para Lions came close midway through the second 10-minute period when Harry Baker headed across the face of goal but just too far ahead of David Porcher.

Neither team were prepared to take too many risks as time ticked on, however, with penalties required to separate the teams.

Mason Dunbar and James Blackwell saw their efforts saved and Ukraine dispatched both of theirs, confirming a cruel defeat.

England still have two matches remaining next week, during which they will confirm their finishing position.
