Ruby Mace described her first-ever call up to the England women’s senior team as a “dream come true” after Lionesses head coach Sarina Wiegman opted to promote the Leicester City starlet from the under-23s.

The midfielder made history when she became the first Foxes player to be called up to represent the Lionesses at senior level, alongside Manchester City’s Laura Blindkilde Brown, who could also make her debut when England take on the USA and Switzerland in two internationals during the window.

“I didn’t actually know that until I saw it on my phone,” said Mace. “If it wasn’t for Leicester, I don’t think I’d be in this position, so it goes both ways I guess and I’m very grateful. It’s a very proud moment for me. I’ll cherish it forever.”

The 21 year old was told the news by Wiegman herself, who informed the youngster of her decision via a phone call – one Mace was taken aback to receive whilst carrying out her chores.

“I actually missed the first call – I was doing the dishwasher!” she laughed. “I checked my calls and I had a missed call so I phoned back and it was Sarina and she told me the news.

“I think I was a little bit speechless at the start – I was trying to process it all and I had so many thoughts in my mind while she was speaking. I was very shocked but very happy when I got the call.”

However, with her senior career in its infancy, she reiterated that this is just the beginning of her journey with the Lionesses.

“I called my dad first and then I called my mum and they were both in tears,” explained Mace. “My sister and my brother were very happy as well. It’s all I’ve ever dreamed of and my family know that.

“It’s a dream come true but for me, it’s only the start. I have to really work hard and push on to sustain my place.”

Back in October 2017, Mace made her international debut for the under-15s, who she previously captained along with the under-17s, before moving through the ranks with the under-19s.

She was named in the WU23s squad for the first time in February 2023 before being selected by Wiegman to be part of the senior squad for the upcoming international camp.

“The pathway through the development age groups is really good and it really prepares you for the next step,” she said. “I’m grateful that I was able to be on that journey all the way through.

“Sarina said how I’ve been doing well at club level and with the WU23s and she wants to see what I’m like in this environment and see what I can bring to the squad.

“I’ve had some conversations with some of the girls who say how good she is and how much she wants to win and be the best. I think that mindset fits my mindset.”
