Lee Carsley fact file and key information

Lee Carsley has been appointed as the England men's senior interim head coach ahead of the Three Lions' UEFA Nations League 2024 campaign.

The Birmingham-born coach steps into the temporary role after spending the previous three years as England men's under-21 head coach, during which time he led the Young Lions to the UEFA U21 EURO title in 2023.

His role with the MU21s was his second spell with England's development teams, having previously worked as an assistant coach with the MU19s team during the 2015-16 season, which he combined with his role as development squad manager and latterly with the senior coaching team at Brentford.

At the end of that season, Carsley left his role with England to take full-time charge of Manchester City's U18s, who he helped lead to the 2017 FA Youth Cup Final with the likes of Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho in his squad.

Carsley then returned to the England set-up in September 2017, when he joined the MU21s as an assistant coach to Aidy Boothroyd as well as working with the MU18, MU19 and MU20 squads while continuing his new role as Birmingham City's U23 coach.

Current senior internationals Marc Guéhi, Conor Gallagher and Bukayo Saka all crossed paths with Carsley at this stage.

His spell as MU21s' assistant coach included the U21 EURO Finals in Italy in 2019, with a squad that featured the likes of Dean Henderson, James Maddison, Foden and Ezri Konsa.

He was then appointed the professional phase lead for the MU20s, MU19s and MU18s squads in September 2020, which saw him taking the role of MU20s head coach during a season hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following Boothroyd's departure as MU21s boss in the summer of 2021, Carsley was appointed as the new head coach in July 2021 as qualifying for the 2023 EUROs kicked off.

A squad featuring James Trafford, Levi Colwill, Anthony Gordon, Jarrad Branthwaite, Curtis Jones and Cole Palmer proceeded to win the trophy in Georgia and Romania.

As a player, Carsley was a midfielder who started his career with Derby County and enjoyed spells in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers, Coventry City and Everton before joining hometown club Birmingham City and finally a second spell with Coventry. He also represented the Republic of Ireland at international level, winning 40 caps and played in the 2002 World Cup.

Having started to take his coaching badges during his time at Everton, his first coaching role came when he was appointed as Coventry's U18 coach in 2011 before he had a taste of senior football as caretaker manager of the Sky Blues.

A spell on the coaching staff at Sheffield United followed before the aforementioned roles he held at Brentford and Manchester City.
