Organisation
Set up an area that suits the age and stage of your team. Split your players into twos, then use cones to mark out a ‘gate’ for each pair. Every couple also needs a ball.
How to play
-
Challenge each pair to receive the ball through the 'gate' (e.g. using a moving or zero-touch turn).
-
Next, split your players into two teams: attackers and defenders.
-
The attacking team should try to complete a moving turn through a gate. The defending team must try to stop them – and win the ball.
-
There should be three footballs in play. If one goes out, players should collect another from the sideline.
-
Add goalkeepers to increase the difficulty.
Progression
If your players master your activity – or find it too hard – try adding a progression. But remember, learning takes time. So don’t alter your activity too quickly – or too much. Try using the STEP framework (Youth Sports Trust, 2002). This helps keep things fun, engaging and appropriate.
Before you adjust your practice, here are some questions to think about.
-
What techniques do your players use?
-
Do your players keep their eyes on the ball?
-
Do your players recognise the available space and opportunities?
-
Do your players know when to shield the ball?
-
Do you players know when to receive to play forward through the gate?
-
Do your players pass well? Consider weight, smoothness and accuracy.
