The best techniques for coaching young players
Are you responsible for training a young football team? Want to develop their skills while making your sessions as enjoyable as possible? Former FA player development coach, John Allpress, has eight top tips for working with young players.
1. Design practices
Create relevant, realistic and appropriate practices to help your group learn the game. A 6v6 practice with offside lines included is a great way of coaching young players, for instance.
2. Develop challenges
Create football-related challenges that focus on learning.
Are your players learning about playing forward? Then your challenge might be, “I’d like you to try to let the ball run across your body and play forward as much as you can.” Or, “try to look for the spaces that allow you to do this before you get the ball.”
3. Give support
Support each challenge with a question that gets your players thinking about how to achieve success.
For example, you might ask, “How can the pass you receive help you to play forward?”
