Different saving actions for goalkeepers
From smothering the ball to making a fingertip save, we explore the actions goalkeepers can take to defend the goal.
Narrow block
Typically, when a goalkeeper gets within three yards of the ball, they’ll be in a low stance as the attacker pulls their foot back to shoot. Here, they have two potential options. The narrow block is one of them. This reduces the space available for the attacker to aim at.
To make this save, keepers may need to try:
- dropping onto one knee, while moving
- using the heel of their standing foot to close the gap between their legs
- having their arms outstretched
- having their head and upper body facing the ball
- to ensure they don’t turn away from the ball.
Smother
The other action to use from this distance is the smother. If the keeper judges that the ball is winnable, they charge out to claim the ball at their opponent’s feet. To do this safely, the goalkeeper needs to go in with their hands leading first, with their head protected behind their hands and outstretched arms.
