Sarina Wiegman and Lucy Bronze faced the press to preview England v USA

Sarina Wiegman and Lucy Bronze faced the press on Friday morning ahead of England’s international fixture against the USA at Wembley.

Both Wiegman and Bronze addressed the Lionesses’ rivalry with the USA and coming up against former Chelsea boss and current USWNT head coach Emma Hayes.

Here is what they had to say in full.

Wiegman on the health of the squad:

The squad is good – everyone is on the pitch. Maya Le Tissier is also on the pitch – non-contact today but looking good. She’s not rushed back. Every day, she has done really well and she’ll be assessed again today. A neutral doctor will finalise that protocol so she can progress into full training sessions and then play.

On the occasion:

We’re playing at Wembley so there’s going to be about 85,000 people, I think. We’re playing the USA who won the Olympics and are number one in the world. Emma Hayes is there and we used to collaborate and now we’re opponents. In the football world we’re actually one family even though we’re competing tomorrow. I’m just really looking forward to that.

On coming up against Emma Hayes:

I think with friends – it’s the same now we’re playing the USA and when we play the Netherlands – you really want to beat your friends, even more so maybe than when it’s not your friends.

On plans to experiment during the game:

We’re building with the team. We’re trying to adapt to the changes to the game and trying to improve our game and different things. Tomorrow, we have our gameplan ready and we’re going to perform at our very best in the game and of course, we go out to play and win.

Bronze on England’s rivalry with the USA:

As long as I’ve been an England player, it’s been one of the most exciting games to play and we always play them in big occasions. There seems to be a rivalry that’s been blossomed out of nowhere over the past decade. We know that no matter what players show up, what players are on the pitch or who the manager is even, it’s such a competitive, high-level game.

On the respect between the two teams:

You get that when you have a rivalry where two teams have got to the highest level and you understand what it takes to get there. We’ve always understood that the US have had to do so much to get to where they are. That’s something we really admire about them and something they then inspired us to do after winning the EUROs.

On testing themselves against the Olympic gold medallists:

To win the Olympics, you have to be intense, you have to be ruthless and you have to have a crazy mentality which sums up the USA perfectly. If we can go toe-to-toe with a team like that, see the mentality it takes and learn from any mistakes we make in the game and push ourselves, show what we’re capable of as well and what we can do against a top team like that, it’s going to put us in very good stead for the next six to eight months.

Match stats

● England won their most recent meeting with the USA in October 2022 (2-1) but not since their very first two games against the Americans in 1985 and 1988 have they beaten the Stars and Stripes in back-to-back matches.

● The USA will face England away from home for just the fourth time, with their only win in the previous three (L2) coming in February 2015 at Stadium MK thanks to an Alex Morgan header.

● England have failed to win their first game of an international break in three of the last four attempts (W1 D1 L2), having lost none and won 13 of their first 16 such matches under manager Sarina Wiegman (D3).

● USA are unbeaten in each of their last 19 friendly matches (W17 D2), keeping a clean sheet in 15 of those - they have however lost their last two friendlies in Europe: vs England in July 2022 and Spain in November 2022.

● England have lost only one of their last 12 matches in all competitions against opponents from outside of Europe (W8 D3), losing 2-0 at home to Australia in an April 2023 friendly.

● USA have won 12 of their 13 matches in all competitions under manager Emma Hayes (D1); the only managers to win as many as 13 of their first 14 games in charge of the USWNT are Vlatko Andonovski (14 in 2021) and Pia Sundhage (13 in 2008).

● England have lost two of their last four home games (W2), more defeats than they suffered across their previous 22 matches on home soil (W15 D6 L1).

● Grace Clinton has scored in two of her four England appearances, including last time out against South Africa. Should she score in back-to-back outings, she would be the youngest to do so (21y 244d) for the Lionesses since Jordan Nobbs in October 2013 (20y 327d).

● Mallory Swanson has been directly involved in more goals for the USA since Emma Hayes’ first game in charge in June (10), being the nation’s leading assister (4) and joint-top scorer in that period (6 – level with Sophia Smith).

● Since Wiegman’s first game in charge of England in September 2021, Mary Earps has a save percentage of 74 per cent for the Lionesses and concedes 0.6 goals per game (43 apps), compared to Hannah Hampton’s rate of 67 per cent and 1.1 goals conceded per game (nine apps).

England and the United States played out a goalless draw in front of a vociferous Wembley on Saturday evening as preparations continue for UEFA Women's EURO Finals in 2025.

The clash between the two teams had been anticipated by many across both sides of the Atlantic, with both sets of supporters cheering in full force and while neither side could break the deadlock, the occasion did not disappoint.

It took just under a minute for England to force USA goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher into action, Jess Naz's delivery from out wide sailing into the arms of the shotstopper.

But the USA would respond just minutes later with a chance of their own, with Alyssa Thompson forcing a fine save from Mary Earps after finding space inside the box.

Emma Hayes' charges would continue to work the ball with purpose, with Lindsey Horan looking to find Thompson's run, only for Lucy Bronze to expertly slide in and avert any danger.

A venture forward from the Lionesses would then see Arsenal's Beth Mead find Jess Park after a marauding run down the left-hand side, though the Manchester City winger could only watch her effort go wide.

A minute later Bronze looked to meet an Alex Greenwood free-kick, the Chelsea full-back's run came too late to prevent the ball from sailing past the back post.

Down the other end of the pitch, England were pressed into evasive action not long after, with Earps brilliantly denying Casey Krueger's low drive before the Lionesses' rearguard scrambled the ball away.

The last action of the first half saw Earps spare England's blushes again after comfortably smothering Sam Coffey's attempt from the edge of the box to keep the sides level as they entered the break.

The restart saw the USA seemingly break through the Lionesses' spirited resistance after Lindsey Horan fired past Earps, but any celebrations would soon be cut short after the American skipper was flagged for offside.

But England would soon respond, with the impressive Park forcing a corner from the visitors after Emily Fox turned the Manchester City star's delivery behind.

The resultant set-piece saw England register their first shot on-target, Leah Williamson heading straight at Naeher as the hosts began to match the USWNT's attacking intent.

Reinvigorated, the Lionesses began to make further inroads into the other end of the pitch, with Georgia Stanway seeing her effort blocked by Emily Sonnett before Arsenal striker Alessia Russo saw an attempt of her own meet a similar fate.

A Russo cross would then find Bronze by way of Naomi Girma's header, though the England defender was unable to control the ball.

Minutes later Beth Mead would look to find her Russo with a dink into the box, though the Arsenal forward's delivery would miss her teammate by the narrowest of margins.

With time running out, an American counter-attack looked poised to open the scoring, but just as they had all evening, the Lionesses stood tall, with Greenwood taking the ball from Rose Lavell's feet to ensure the scores stayed level at the final whistle.
