One of the stars of the summer talks about her experience of life on camp with the Lionesses

PLAYER PROFILE: MICHELLE AGYEMANG

Michelle Agyemang checked in to St. George’s Park earlier this week as the Lionesses linked up once again ahead of October international camp.

After playing a starring role in England’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 triumph in the summer, the youngster is becoming accustomed to life with the Lionesses.

From her go-to pre-match meal to favourite music, Agyemang answers a series of questions about what she gets up to on camp.

What is one essential item you’re packing in your suitcase for a camp?

If you want to be serious, football boots, obviously!

But for me, headphones. I like listening to music and when I want to be in the zone and spend some time with myself, I think music is really important to me.

What about one luxury item?

Perfume. You’ve got to smell nice! Especially when you’re around each other every minute of the day.

How do you like to spend your downtime on camp?

Now since I’ve started school again, I’m studying literally all the time – I’m in my second year of business management, so it’s a bit more hectic – so there’s not a lot of downtime.

I did a lecture this morning! I go in but I can’t really go into London from here so I just do them online. If not, I’m just chilling with some of my team-mates and having a good time.

Who would you sit next to on a plane or bus journey to an England game?

I do normally sit next to Khiara [Keating]. I think we obviously get on really well. We have a good chat and a good laugh. We have good banter. If she knows that I want to be quiet, she’ll listen eventually! She can talk for England, honestly, but she’s great.

What kind of character or personality would you say you are within the group and how would your team-mates describe you?

I think I’m just calm. I’m there if you need me but I don’t really say too much but when it is needed, I will say something. I’m not too loud but not too quiet either.

What is your favourite meal to eat on camp?

My go-to pre-match meal, especially at the EUROs, was chicken and bacon fried rice with teriyaki sauce. It was amazing. I wish I could have it every day but it is genuinely really good for you and it’s delicious.

What is your favourite part of training?

I think anything that has to do with small-sided games, goals and just playing regular football. I just want to play a game.

I always call my grandad and my dad before games and we pray together because I’m very big on my faith. We pray together and I pray myself as well.

I’m listening to music all the time before games, too. I don’t usually talk before games unless we’re having a team talk. Then straight out and just do what we have to do.

What kind of music do you listen to before a game?

I listen to gospel all the time but I think it’s very versatile. You can have gospel R&B, gospel anything really. Sometimes it’s really loud, upbeat songs and sometimes it’s not but I don’t mind – just any music!

If you want to be professional, I have protein! I struggle to eat after games straightaway so I take some time before I eat.

We have time to see friends and family after which is really nice, so I spend some time with them and get on the coach and go straight back.

What is your favourite thing about being on camp?

Just playing with different players. It’s nice to step away from what you do ordinarily, week in, week out and to play with talented players from across the country. It’s really nice, so I like being with girls that I haven’t seen for months and it’s nice to be back with them.

How would you sum up pulling on an England shirt and representing your country?

It’s a sense of pride. To do that is something that I don’t take for granted, to wear the shirt and go out and kick a ball and know that you’ve got the whole country on your side too. It’s very uplifting.

What is your favourite moment during your England career?

To be fair, you could say winning the trophy but I think personally, I’d say the Italy game. To be a part of that and to sit with the team through the whole game and to see how we were almost out and then to be able to say that I was part of the squad for that game was amazing. I think that one was even better than the Sweden one.

When I came on, me and Aggie [Beever-Jones] came on together and it was nice to know that your team trusted you when you get on the pitch. Thankfully we delivered and it was quite enjoyable once we got those two goals.

What is one piece of advice your younger self would’ve given you now you’re in this position, playing for England?

Just being confident, expressing yourself and do what you do best because that’s why you’re here. Especially when I was younger, it’s hard, to be a bit shy and not to want to express yourself but when you’re on a big stage like this, you’ve got nothing to lose and you’re here for a reason.
