Lionesses midfielder speaks after starring in victory over South Africa

MATCH CENTRE: ENGLAND v SOUTH AFRICA

England’s Grace Clinton reflected on a good night’s work, as she impressed during the 2-1 win over South Africa on Tuesday evening.

The midfielder scored her second goal for the Lionesses to put England two goals up in Coventry, with what proved to be the winner after the visitors pulled a goal back in the second half.

And the Manchester United player spoke after the game as preparations for next summer’s EURO Finals in Switzerland continue.

"It was a tough game,” said Clinton.

“South Africa are a great team, they got to the last 16 of the World Cup so we expected them to be a tough team with individual quality.

"They're a tough opposition, really tough. The pace they have in that team is crazy so to get the win and get a goal is really nice."

After captain Leah Williamson stroked England ahead in the early stages, it was a goal made in Manchester for Clinton as her United teammate Maya Le Tissier broke forward from right-back before picking out a perfect cross.

"It's been a good night for me, I'm nice and confident and it's nice to be out there,” added Clinton.

"She [Maya] looked up for me and I saw her waiting for me to get into the box. The ball was just amazing - it was hard not to finish."

With two games to come in November and December against both USA and Switzerland on home soil, as well as plenty of domestic action for all the players with their respective clubs, all eyes are starting to focus on next summer and securing a place in Sarina Wiegman’s squad.

"Obviously everyone wants to play for England, for their country,” admitted Clinton.

“My personal goal is to stay confident and keep getting goals really."

Tickets for both England’s game with USA at Wembley on Saturday 29 November and the match with Switzerland in Sheffield on Tuesday 3 December remain on sale.
