Session programme: receiving and finishing to score

Want to help your players improve their goalscoring ability? Here’s a six-week session programme to help 7-11s develop their receiving and finishing skills.

This six-week programme aims to help your players:

  • receive the ball using different techniques
  • receive the ball under pressure
  • use different finishing techniques
  • receive a pass then shoot.

If you're short on time, this programme can be used as it is. But it’s a template you can build on. So, to make the session or programme more effective, adapt it to suit your players and their needs, as well as the numbers and space you have. If you want to skip, repeat or amend individual practices or the whole session – that's fine. It’s up to you how you use this resource.

Any pitch sizes in this programme are shown as how long the pitch is x how wide it is, but these are just suggestions.

If you like this idea, download the whole programme and give it a go. And don't forget to share your experience on the England Football Community. We'd love to know how you got on.

If you’re coaching U7s, please note that from the 2026-27 season, changes will be made to the formats to improve the experience young players get across the country. Check out the Future Fit digital content hub to find out more and alter training plans accordingly.

Coaching points

  • Encourage your players to try to scan before receiving the ball. Make sure they’re looking at their teammates and opposition players.
  • Make sure your players learn how to use a variety of receiving techniques to help with any situation.
  • Ask players to make sure they’re using their body to protect the ball.

On the pitch: week one

Coaching points

  • To receive the ball successfully, players also need to understand what makes a good pass. To break this down for players, consider a before, during and after approach.
    • Before: establish contact with the receiver so the passer and receiver are on the same wavelength.
    • During: focus on passing technique with the receiver’s intentions in mind.
    • After: think about offering support to help progress play or keep possession.
  • Get players to think about their positioning and their body shape before receiving. If players approach at an angle and position themselves on the half-turn, they can receive and turn more easily.

On the pitch: week two

Coaching points

  • Make sure your players learn how to use a variety of finishing techniques to help with any situation.
  • Get players to consider their body shape when receiving the ball to set up their next action
  • Ask players to think about whether to control the ball or to try to finish first time.

On the pitch: week three

Wondering what this could look like? Check out the video to see how a coach took this session idea and adapted it for a group of players.

Coaching points

  • Challenge players to be brave enough to try different things when it comes to finishing. For instance, they could shoot early and bend it around a defender, or through their legs, to catch the keeper off guard.
  • Make sure your players learn how to use a variety of receiving and finishing techniques to help with any situation.
  • Highlight the importance of support and team shape when working as a team to finish. The more danger the defender has to consider, the easier it might be for attackers to get a shot on goal.

On the pitch: week four

Wondering what this could look like? Check out the video to see how a coach took this session idea and adapted it for a group of players.

Coaching points

  • Ask players to make sure they’re using their body to protect the ball in tight spaces near the goal.
  • Encourage players to be creative by experimenting with different ways to find space and using various finishing techniques.
  • Consider timing of combinations with teammates to unlock chances to finish.

On the pitch: week five

Wondering what this could look like? Check out the video to see how a coach took this session idea and adapted it for a group of players.

Coaching points

  • Make sure your players revisit a variety of receiving and finishing techniques to help with any situation, recognising when to combine if needed.
  • Ask players to think about their body shape and positioning to receive the ball effectively to set up their next action.
  • Encourage players to be brave when in front of goal. This requires a positive learning environment where players aren’t afraid of making mistakes.
