Play Phase session: Australian adventure

Looking for an activity for 4-6 year-olds? Try Australian adventure. All you need are some players and a few cones.

“Australian adventure” is a copy-and-follow game. Copy-and-follow is where you or a child takes the lead in demonstrating an action, movement or task. It is great for mixed groups because each child can work at their level.

IIt's easy to set up. You only need a group of players and some cones to mark out an area.

While in Australia. Ask who can show what movement a kangaroo makes? The rest of the group follows this action.

Ask if they want to go to the outback or the Great Barrier Reef. Explore these worlds. Have the children follow you by:

  • rolling their football side to side (like snakes or crabs)
  • running fast and slow (like bats or a shoal of fish)
  • dribbling the ball quickly (after seeing a dingo or a great white shark).

Coaching activity

Watch this video to see the activity in action.

Imaginative play – add a little imagination

Introduce more Australian animals and environments like the outback and koalas.

Object play – introduce equipment

Use balls, blocks, rings, beanbags and cones to help develop movement and skills.

Social play – bring everyone together

Develop social skills by making parts of the story about working together or being helpful or supportive.

Physical play – get more physical

Be creative. Perhaps jump over a football by pretending it's a big hole.

Remember to give it a football focus. Include shooting at a gigantic spider web as part of your story. Remember that not everyone needs to be introduced to this at the same time.
