It speaks volumes of Keira Walsh’s ability and the regard in which she’s held that the midfielder captained her country at the age of just 21 and was a European Champion just four years later.
To illustrate this further, she was handed the armband for England’s 6-0 win in Kazakhstan in September 2018 in what was only her seventh appearance for the senior team.
A playmaker of the highest calibre, Walsh gave further notice of her burgeoning talent with an assist for Beth Mead’s goal against Japan at the 2019 SheBelieves Cup; a pass which took eight opposition players out of the game.
And she did it again on the biggest stage of all when her slide-rule pass to Ella Toone set up the opening goal of the EURO 2022 Final against Germany at Wembley Stadium, before she was named player of the match.
It is perhaps fitting that she was seen as the heir apparent to England legend Fara Williams, who coached an 11-year-old Walsh on the FA Skills programme in 2008.
Walsh helped Manchester City win the BWSL title in 2016, the Vitality Women’s FA Cup three times and the Continental League Cup on four occasions, before she was transferred to Barcelona in the summer of 2022. She went on to win the UEFA Women's Champions League title in her first season with the Catalonian giants, alongside England teammate Lucy Bronze.
As well as the 2019 SheBelieves Cup, Walsh helped the Lionesses claim the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup in 2022 and again in 2023.
