England geared up for UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 in style with a dominant 5-1 win over the reigning European champions the Netherlands at Elland Road.

Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead, Ella Toone and Lauren Hemp all scored on a night when a dazzling second-half display saw Sarina Wiegman’s team impress in their final home match before the start of the EUROs on Wednesday 6 July.

Lieke Martens put the Netherlands ahead early with a first-half header, but Mark Parsons' side were ultimately defeated by a roaring Lionesses squad.

England had their first cheer early as Beth England fired a warning shot straight into goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal's arms on 12 minutes.

Hemp followed up with an opportunity two minutes later as a poor lack of control from van Veenendaal allowed the hosts to almost grab the first goal of the game.

But the Netherlands were quick to respond with Lineth Beerensteyn showcasing her dangerous form in the box that led to Mary Earps diving for several saves.

England were playing in their last home game before the start of this summer's EUROs

The growing pressure ended in a setback for Wiegman's side 22 minutes in, as Martens nodded in a strong header from a corner to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

The goal marked the first time the English side had gone behind in Wiegman’s tenure.

But England were not shaken and almost capitalised from an Alex Greenwood free-kick after Aniek Nouwen was given a yellow card for taking down Fran Kirby on the edge of the box.

And the home side were rewarded on 32 minutes as Bronze struck gold with a cross which found the top-left corner for a leveller.

England bustled at the start of the second half but a tackle from Greenwood on Danielle van de Donk saw VAR brought into the game for the first time - and the stakes suddenly increased dramatically.

The result meant a booking for Greenwood and a penalty for the Netherlands, but captain Sherida Spitse was unable to find the net as the ball hit the outside of the post and Elland Road erupted in cheers.

And the applause only grew in the 53rd minute as Hemp stormed down the left-hand side and drove a sublime cross into the box for substitute Mead to put England ahead for the first time.

There was a further back-and-forth tussle as several unfruitful attempts from Hemp and Mead saw England continue to knock on the door.

But the Lionesses were not finished as they preyed on a tiring Netherland side.

Toone carefully dodged Dutch player Lynn Wilms in a controlled display of footwork before curling a shot underneath the diving Van Veenendaal to make it 3-1.

And just two minutes later Hemp effectively sealed the deal with a looping shot into the top corner to make it four.

Alessia Russo also hit the post as England attacked with regularity and Mead ended the game on a high as she kept her composure to find the bottom corner and cap a five-star England performance.

England will have their final warm-up game in Switzerland on Thursday before they kick off UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 against Austria at Old Trafford on Wednesday 6 July.
