The Newcastle United central-defender received his first international call-up at any level at the age of 32 in March 2025, when he was named in Thomas Tuchel's first squad as England head coach.
It had been quite the journey to the international stage for Burn too, who grew up in the north-east and played for non-League clubs Blyth Town and Blyth Spartans as a youngster before he was taken on by Darlington while studying sport science at college and working in a local supermarket.
His progress there saw him feature quickly for the first team as he began to catch the eye, before he was signed in 2011 by Fulham where he continued his development. Loan spells with Yeovil Town and Birmingham City gave him more first-team experience before he returned to Craven Cottage and became a regular in the Championship before he was released in 2016 after a five-year spell in west London.
A move to Wigan Athletic came next, where Burn was named as the club's player of the season in his first campaign. After two seasons at the JJB Stadium, Burn was back on the move south to Brighton & Hove Albion, followed by a loan spell back at Wigan. On his return to Brighton, he went on to enjoy a fruitful spell as he established himself as a regular in the Premier League.
In January 2022, Burn's boyhood dream was complete as he made the move back to his native north-east by joining Newcastle United, the club he supported as a youngster. He quickly became a fan favourite with his whole-hearted and solid displays in defence, which caught the eye of Tuchel in the 2024-25 season before his maiden call-up.
