Thomas Tuchel addressed the media ahead of the game
Thomas Tuchel addressed the media ahead of the game

Thomas Tuchel and Dan Burn faced the press on Friday morning ahead of the game against Andorra.

Here is what they had to say.

Tuchel on the progress of the team:

I’m happy with where I am at the moment. There was a lot of learning for us and for me personally in the first two camps. It’s never about what you did, it’s always about what you do in the moment and then to go forward and progress and get better.

We have a very important training session today to be ready for the match on Saturday but I’m happy where I am and I’m happy where the team is. We can feel it that it’s a change of attitude if you finally arrive in the World Cup season.

On the withdrawal of John Stones:

Unfortunately, John Stones just left. He came with minor issues – muscle issues – to camp and didn’t progress as we thought and hoped he would, so he left camp this morning because we will not take the risk up against Andorra and also unfortunately, not against Serbia.

Everyone else is available. We had 21 players yesterday in training and 21 players today in training and hopefully make sure everyone is available for tomorrow.

On the starting XI for the game against Andorra:

It’s World Cup season. We have a condensed period of three camps, the competition is on and that means we will start with a team that we trust and with the best team possible for this game and then we will manage the second game.

We will not do it backwards and manage theoretically, a more difficult away game than a home game. We will not start getting caught up in experiments like this. Everything that counts is today and tomorrow then we do our assessment after the match and see who’s available.

The players will start anyway to play two matches a week and three matches a week after international camp, so I don’t see a problem why they cannot start one week earlier and play Saturday, Tuesday.

On the camp so far:

I cannot be happier with the engagement, the quality, the awareness and how the group is together. Hopefully we have another trop training session later today and hopefully we can prove the point to you that fans can see what I see on a daily basis.

I’m very happy how they welcomed the newcomers. I’m very happy how the newcomers presented themselves, not only on the pitch but also off the pitch.

Like I said, it’s been an excellent three days, four days so far and we want to keep that going. Everyone is doing very, very good and it’s an excellent atmosphere.

Burn on his third England camp:

I think the first camp was amazing to be there but I feel like the more camps I go on now, I feel more confident in my own ability to play at this level. I think it’s the unknown until you come here and you’ve played a game – you don’t really know if you can do it.

But now that I’ve done it and I’m starting to build up the camps – I think it’s camp three now and three to go – I feel like I should be here and deserving a place.

On looking ahead to the World Cup:

On a personal level, I’m probably playing the best football that I have in my career. I feel really good physically and I’m in a good place mentally where I’m up for the challenge.

As I said, in my very first camp, the World Cup was something that was not even close to being on my radar but now we’re in camp three and building towards it, I just want to try and implement what the gaffer’s asking of me in the team and just trying to play as well as I can so I keep getting picked for these camps.

On the Andorra game:

I try and go in with that mentality that I’m leaving absolutely everything out there. I’m always trying to not have any regrets and think, ‘I wish I hadn’t done this or done that’, so I’m trying to do exactly what the manager’s asked.

I think there was probably a lot of learning from the last time we played Andorra, maybe tactical things that we didn’t get quite right or we can change a little bit. Even from a mentality view, a lot of lads are used to playing these games where you’re on the ball constantly and expected to dominate and I’m probably not really used to that with the teams I’ve played for in the past and the games that I’m doing.

On his own performances:

That was the word the manager used at the start of this camp was now it’s competition, that we’re not only competing to make the World Cup with two important qualifiers but also with each other.

There’s been players in and out of different camps so now it’s now competing with the players in my position to try and nail down that place. I know that there’s a lot of depth and big players in my position, so I want to be the one that plays all the games.

Match Stats

- England have won all seven of their matches against Andorra without conceding a single goal – they’ve only faced Luxembourg (9/9) and San Marino (8/8) more often while winning every single game.

- Andorra have lost their three away matches against England by an aggregate score of 15-0. Without a goal in seven against the Three Lions, the only other nation they’ve faced that often without scoring against is Iceland (also seven).

- England are unbeaten in their last 34 World Cup qualifiers (W26 D8) since a 1-0 loss at Ukraine in October 2009. At home, they’re unbeaten in their last 30 (W27 D3) since losing 1-0 to Germany in their final game at the old Wembley in October 2000.

- Andorra have gone 14 competitive matches without scoring a goal (D2 L12) since an Albert Rosas goal against Israel in June 2023, a run of 21 hours and 38 minutes without finding the net. Should they fail to score in this game, it would be their second run of 15 games without a competitive goal (also between 2010 and 2013).

- This is England’s first international game at Villa Park since a goalless draw with the Netherlands in February 2005. The Three Lions have won four of their nine games there (D4 L1), their lowest win ratio on a home ground they’ve played more than three games at (44.4 per cent).

- England come into this match in fourth in the FIFA World Rankings. Andorra have played 46 matches previously against nations ranked inside the top-20 at the time of the game and have lost all 46 by an aggregate score of 168-5.

- Harry Kane has been involved in 54 goals in 38 qualifying matches for major tournaments (EURO/World Cup), scoring 43 and assisting eleven. He’s also looking to score in six consecutive appearances for the Three Lions for a fourth time – something only achieved six times by all other players in England’s history.

Declan Rice’s header sent England on their way to Serbia with four World Cup qualifying wins from as many games after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Andorra.

The Arsenal midfielder nodded home a pinpoint downwards header after Andorran defender Christian Garcia’s own goal got the Three Lions up and running at Villa Park.

Thomas Tuchel’s side dominated proceedings throughout and will now travel to Belgrade for their fifth Group K game in midweek, hoping to take one step further towards booking their ticket to the World Cup in the Americas next summer.

Tuchel handed a debut to Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, who has impressed at the start of this season and started in midfield alongside Rice.

And former Manchester United star Marcus Rashford also started at Villa Park, a ground where he played on loan last season before swapping Old Trafford for Barcelona this summer.

Rashford started brightly in the West Midlands as Noni Madueke also looked lively on the other flank.

And Anderson also appeared firmly at home on his Three Lions debut, comfortable in possession and making England tick.

England were dominating possession but failing to find a breakthrough until 26 minutes when they finally struck.

Madueke whipped in a ball from the right flank and with Harry Kane lurking behind, Garcia looped an unfortunate header into his own net.

England pushed for a second before half-time and despite failing to do so, remained firmly in control heading into the break.

The second half started more brightly as Tuchel’s side forced Andorran goalkeeper Iker Alvarez into a string of impressive saves.

The first was drawn by Eberechi Eze, who forced a strong one-handed stop after good work from Madueke out wide.

And the second then came from Anderson, who was denied a dream goal on his debut after being played through by captain Kane.

But England did double their advantage just after the hour mark when Rice headed home from a sumptuous Reece James cross.

The Arsenal midfielder arrowed an expert header into the corner of the net to wrap up what proved to be a comfortable three points for England.

Tuchel shook things up shortly after that as Tino Livramento, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon and Ezri Konsa all entered the fray.

And despite England pushing for a third, Tuchel’s side settled for a comfortable two-goal victory ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Serbia for the fifth game of the group.
