Tyler Dibling: 'We have an amazing group'
The MU21s and Everton winger reflects on his England memories and the push to achieve more
Dibling, who has represented England from MU16s right through to the MU21s, says it’s important to stay grounded as his team looks for a repeat of last summer’s UEFA U21 EURO success after an unbeaten start to qualification for the 2027 edition.
“We’re an amazing group,” he said. “We don’t really see it as that [competing with the previous accomplishments at MU21s level], but we know what we can do.
“[Lee] Carsley gives every attacking player the freedom, and you can see it on the pitch, in the way we play, that we can be creative.
“When they [Andorra] went 1-0 up last week, we clicked into gear. I think the same happened here when it went 1-1, but we need to do that from the start.”
Charting his early childhood memories, as Thomas Tuchel's senior team prepare for this summer's World Cup in North America, Dibling revealed that the thought of representing the Three Lions in a competition like that is what drives him on.
“My first memories are of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, when I was maybe eight," he explained.
“Every player wants to play at a World Cup with their country - it’s the biggest tournament in the world and would be a dream come true.”
Currently in his first season with the Toffees, after making his top-flight breakthrough with Southampton last term, the 20 year old can count himself among a long line of talented players to have played on Merseyside.
For his part, the Devon-born attacker still has plenty of time on his side as he searches for his first Premier League goal and draws on the valuable lessons he’s learned from his senior teammates around him at the training ground.
“It’s been tough [at club level]," he admits.
"When I come with England, it’s good to get minutes and play in these types of games to know that when I go back to Everton, I can really push on at the end of the season and into the next.
“I had a good season last year with Southampton and it’s been harder for me this season with not playing as many games, but it’s all experience at the end of the day.
“I have definitely learned from people like Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish, because they’re such good players. When you see them every day, you can take things from their game.
“I need to keep pushing myself, keep working hard at training, and I’m going to go into next season ready to go, mentally and physically.”
