MATCH REPORT: ENGLAND 3-0 AUSTRALIA

Lionesses head coach Sarina Wiegman identified her key takeaways from England’s 3-0 win over Australia in Derby, while highlighting areas for improvement.

Aggie Beever-Jones, Lucy Bronze and Georgia Stanway were each on target for Wiegman’s side who bounced back from defeat against Brazil at the weekend.

“We wanted to dominate the game,” noted Wiegman. “Early in the game, a player was sent off for them so we were against ten. We had a lesson of how to play against ten the other day so we kept the pace up.

“We were okay on the ball but we can do better in the final third, be better on the ball and make better decisions, then we could have scored a little bit more. But we were solid when we didn’t have the ball.”

The England boss handed debuts to Lucia Kendall and Taylor Hinds who both started the game at Pride Park.

And Wiegman explained just how delighted she was with Aston Villa youngster Kendall’s showing.

“I think she did really well,” said Wiegman. “She impressed me and my staff from the beginning of the season with Aston Villa and she did really well in the training sessions.

“She picks positions up well and she reads the game really well. It just comes with her and she keeps things really simple, but that’s not always easy.

“She has a great touch too so I that’s why I thought she deserved the start today.

“She’s very young, very powerful and she opens up spaces for other people. She scans well and wins duels. I’m positive and happy for her.”

Michelle Agyemang was stretchered off the pitch in the second half after being introduced as a substitute and when asked if she had any update on the teenager, Wiegman responded.

“No, because I haven't been inside yet but, of course, that looked horrible,” added Wiegman. “Of course, it’s never nice when you’re stretchered off anyway but that does not look good. It looks bad.”

The Lionesses are back in action next month, with two further games pencilled in the Homecoming Series.

Wiegman’s side take on China at Wembley before hosting Ghana at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.

“We always want to improve in every game,” she emphasised. “We know we have four games against very different opponents which give us different challenges which is exactly what we want.”
