Hannah Hampton striving for improvement
England goalkeeper reflects on the team's and her own performance in Lionesses' victory over Spain
HANNAH HAMPTON'S GRASSROOTS STORY
England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton reflected on another clean sheet for the Lionesses, after playing her part in the UEFA Women’s Nations League victory over Spain.
The Chelsea star was handed a spot in the starting lineup at Wembley and responded with a confident and impressive performance as Jess Park’s first-half goal proved to be the winner.
And Hampton believes the team performance was crucial in securing a solid win against the world champions.
"We dug in hard as a team and we got that important result, which we needed in our group,” said Hampton, who actually grew up and began playing football in Spain as a youngster.
“Defensively we were solid. We kept them out.”

Hampton’s chances to feature in the team have been limited over the years, with Mary Earps proving such an important part of the Lionesses’ recent story.
But with four more Nations League games to play before attention turns to this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 Finals in Switzerland, Hampton is just aiming to keep on improving and providing strong competition for her fellow goalkeepers.
"I'm just here to play my own game and I know what I can bring to the team,” she said.
“Likewise, Mary is a brilliant goalkeeper and we've seen that in the last two tournaments: how incredible she's been.
"For me I'm just focusing on myself, when I enjoy my football I play the best that I can. It's never down to us who makes the decisions, so you've just got to put yourself in the shop window and I'll just keep going out and doing my best for the team.
"I mean, it [the victory over Spain] will be up there [career highlight] for sure but I do think there's things in that game that I can improve on and get better at.
“I think with my distribution I can help the team out a bit more and some of the saves could be a bit cleaner, but at the end of the day we got the win and that's all that matters.
“I'll go and watch the game back and learn all the things in need to improve on.”
