Lionesses goalscorer speaks after opening-game point against Portugal in the UEFA Women's Nations League and looks ahead to Spain's visit to Wembley

MATCH REPORT: PORTUGAL 1-1 ENGLAND

Alessia Russo says England will be looking at how they can improve on their point in Portugal ahead of their next game with Spain.

The Lionesses were held to a 1-1 draw in Portimão in their opening game of 2025 and the new UEFA Women's Nations League campaign.

Russo opened the scoring in a bright first-half display from Sarina Wiegman's side, before the hosts upped the ante after the break before Kika Nazareth levelled things up to leave the Lionesses frustrated.

"I think there is [frustration]...we let them back into the game," admitted Russo.

"It was a tough night, but we've got lots we can take going into Spain at Wembley.

"The first half was positive, and the second half we let them back in, as I said, and it was a little bit more difficult for ourselves.

"We'll reflect on it over the next couple of days and look back at it as a team.

"They're a good side, but we hold our standards higher."

On a personal note, Russo was pleased to get herself back on the scoresheet on the international stage after enjoying an impressive campaign in the BWSL with Arsenal.

"I'm just really enjoying my football, and feeling confident going into games and just trying to do my job," she added.

"It was a great ball in from Lucy [Bronze], so I just had to finish it off.

"It'll be tough [on Wednesday], we've got to get recovered, do some analysis and then go again.

"But we want to be testing ourselves against the best teams and getting ready for a massive summer."
