Alessia Russo was ‘honoured’ to be named England Women’s 2023-24 Player of the Year connected by EE, an award voted for by fans up and down the country.

The Lionesses striker was surprised with the award by her family at St. George’s Park earlier this week as Sarina Wiegman’s squad joined up for this month’s matches against Germany and South Africa.

Russo said: "Every time you play for England it’s so special and this is an honour.

"It’s what you dream about. It’s really special and nice to have my family here as well. There’s still lots more work to do and hopefully we’ll have a big year.

"It was a positive year for us overall, with some ups and downs. I always try to contribute as best I can."

In addition to her fan-voted award, Russo was also handed the Top Goalscorer award presented by Marks and Spencer.

On receiving a second prize, she said: "My favourite goal was the one against Sweden, my first Wembley goal. It was a massive game

"It will continue to be an honour to play for England and score goals. Long may it continue."
