Match Report: Finland v England

England got back to winning ways in Helsinki on Sunday evening, with a 3-1 victory over Finland in the UEFA Nations League.

Goals from Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice put the Three Lions in control, before Finland pulled a consolation goal back in the later stages.

And after suffering defeat in their previous game against Greece at Wembley last week, Carsley was pleased with the way his players responded.

“We were looking for a reaction, it's a big thing,” he said.

“We're three or four games into it so it's still not quite worked out how the team responds to setbacks.

“But I think they've responded really well in the best way and scored three good goals, a bit disappointed to concede that one at the end but I thought we were a lot better tonight.

“We played with a lot more control. Looking at the data we've got, we had massive possession, lots of passes, created a lot of chances but I think we could still be better.”

Despite Grealish’s early opener, England had to wait until the final third of the game to add gloss to the scoreline but Carsley always thought his side would get more opportunities as the game went on.

“They were very well organised, five at the back and not a lot of space, so we had to wait and create that space. When you have as much possession as we do you're always going to create chances from 70 minutes onwards, so it was good that the subs that came on made such an impact which was pleasing.”

Carsley utilised Alexander-Arnold in a left-sided role for this game and he was happy with the way it worked out regardless of the excellent free-kick he scored to make it 2-0.

“I think Trent's quality speaks for itself, I don't see it as finding a place for him, he's more than earned his place.

“We do get bogged down with left-back, right-back, where's his position but as long as he's in effective positions it's great to have him.

“I think it's important that we have players of that quality and play to their strengths and we definitely do that with Trent.

“Jack [Grealish] was also outstanding tonight. It was a shame he missed the first game, as he would've been really effective against Greece.

“I wish we could fast-forward and play Greece next week but Jack was very good, he’s an infectious character, so I’m really pleased for him.”

England will be back in action next month when they travel to face Greece in Athens before rounding off their UEFA Nations League campaign against Republic of Ireland at Wembley.

Tickets for that game are still on sale here.
