Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka set new World Cup records
Goals and appearances in Iran victory see young pair join World Cup record lists
England duo Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka secured their place in the FIFA World Cup history books on Monday, after their roles in the 6-2 win over Iran.
The Three Lions kicked-off their campaign in Qatar with an eye-catching scoreline against Carlos Quieroz’s team, which began when Bellingham headed home the opener to register his first England senior goal.
At the age of just 19 years and 145 days, the goal made the former Stourbridge Junior and Birmingham City product England’s second-youngest World Cup goalscorer behind Michael Owen following his strike against Romania in 1998.
And when Saka added England’s second goal of the game shortly afterwards, he took his place as our third youngest World Cup scorer at the age of 21 years and 77 days to usurp Dele Alli after his goal against Sweden in 2018.

Saka then grabbed a second goal after the break to become the youngest England player to bag a World Cup brace.
The former Greenford Celtic youngster and Arsenal ace also became the first Black player to score more than one goal for England in a World Cup game, joining Harry Kane (2018 v Tunisia and Panama), Gary Lineker (1986 v Poland and Paraguay), Ivor Broadis (1954 v Switzerland), Nat Lofthouse (1954 v Switzerland), Roger Hunt (1966 v France), Sir Bobby Charlton (1966 v Portugal) and Bryan Robson (1982 v France) among the players to score multiple goals in one game at a World Cup.
Bellingham’s World Cup debut also saw him become our third youngest player to start a World Cup game, with Owen (18 years and 194 days) in 1998 leading the way and current squad member Luke Shaw in second spot after his appearance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil at the age of 18 years and 347 days.
The Three Lions squad will now be turning their attentions to their second group match when they face USA on Friday evening.
