Why coaches should help players regulate their emotions and behaviours

If football players can control their emotions and behaviour, they’ll become better decision-makers on and off the ball. And that gives them the chance to perform to their potential.

If they’re unable to regulate their emotions and behaviour, that can hamper their learning, progress and enjoyment. Plus, it can have a knock-on effect on the environment you’re trying to create.

So, as a coach, it’s important to help them with this.

Top tips for helping football players to manage their emotions and behaviour

A graphic summarising the top tips from this article. Get to know the person before the player. Understand their emotions – is it part of their culture? Is it just part of their personality? Have boundaries of what's acceptable and what's not acceptable within your sessions. Create a safe, secure environment and establish your values. If you see behaviours that don't align with what you and the team want, isolate the behaviour, not the player. Remember, how you act as the coach will impact how the players behave. Be a role model and set a good example for your team.
